On the Sunday before Pride week and on National Coming Out Day, we gather to celebrate the woman we lost in August and the truth she spent eighty years telling: that what you build of yourself is not a betrayal of what you are. It is what you are. Wear something bright. There will be glitter. There will be Dolly. Bring somebody who needs to hear it.

Art can move us and open our souls, whether witnessing or making it. Great art can grab our attention, touch us, provide revelation, and drive change. Some art has moved whole civilizations like the Bayeaux Tapestry, Guernica, the Vietnam Memorial, “Wall of Tears” (Gaza), Banksy’s 7 installations in Ukraine, and “Broken Spectre” multimedia dive into the Amazon. Making art, in all its forms, from baking a fine pie, to orchestrating a group project, to painting or sculpting or making lau Hala, we participate in creation. We will reflect on soul-moving art and hear from artists in our midst on their experience of soul in art.

Warriors for the human spirit act with bravery to meet fears, remain tenderhearted, and act with dignity for the benefit of others. Our world needs people who put service over self, stand steadfast through disappointment, and protect spaces where generosity, creativity, and community can flourish. In the light of our UU principles and values, the prophets and thinkers we honor, our Hawaiian soul, and our own commitments, we will consider how this congregation lives in these ways, as warriors for the human spirit.

In a Hawaiʻi strained by housing injustice and colonial wounds, radical kindness means more than being nice—it means practicing aloha that shares limited space, listens across difference, and refuses to abandon those most harmed. We will explore how everyday acts of mercy and kinship can sustain our island of sanity.

In an “age of threat,” we will look to these Hawaiian Islands as a living parable of sanity—places of slowed pace, fierce hospitality, and painful scarcity. Here, those who have lost land still practice welcome, and communities must learn to live within limits while guarding spiritual abundance. Drawing on Margaret Wheatley and Hawaiʻi Soul, we will ask who we choose to be on these islands: how we might become an “island of sanity” where our human spirits come alive, and we commit to healthy community and meaningful work.
