Welcome
to the First Unitarian Church of Honolulu’s Spirit Play webpage.
Our program is for children aged 4 – 12.
| Who am I? Where did I come from? What do I believe? And Why?Does your child wonder about the mysteries of life? Do you seek a supportive environment for your child to explore their values and ask big questions?
Beginning in September we will offer “Spirit Play” for children aged 4 to 12. Spirit Play is a Unitarian Universalist program of religious education created in the Montessori tradition. Based on story and ritual, play and creativity — Spirit Play engages children in existential questions about life within the liberal context of the Unitarian Universalist faith. Through active storytelling, “wondering” time and related activities, Spirit Play encourages independent thinking and allows children to learn a language for talking about their faith in a non-dogmatic way. Children will explore art, nature, science, music and storytelling while learning about themes such as kindness, the interdependent web of existence, equity, transformation, love, justice and generosity. Trained educators will present the lessons each Sunday. The First Unitarian Church is located at 2500 Pali Highway in Honolulu. Church Services begin at 10:00AM. For more information about our church please go to our website at uuhonolulu.org, or call (808) 595-4047. There is no cost to attend this program. |

Upcoming Spirit Play Stories:
Our last summer day will be September 1st.
We are excited to share our plans for the upcoming year of Spirit Play.
Our dear teachers are returning: Nancy, Laurel, Peg, Crystal and Karen. We have planned out the first few weeks in September. The service on Sept 7th is an intergenerational service meaning the kids are downstairs with the adults. The visiting minister will have things for them to do at the kids table and will tell a story.
| Sept 7 | Rev Lynne Scarpa Intergenerational Water Service |
Water Communion |
| Sept 14 | Nancy | Welcome back |
| Sept 21 | Laurel | The Cracked Pot |
| Sept 28 | Karen | Ruby Bridges |

We are also planning a new curriculum for 6th graders. The curriculum is from the Unitarian Universalist Associations Tapestry of Faith program called Amazing Grace. Exploring Right and Wrong, giving a sense of its nature, a taste of its activities, and an experience of its richly mixed learning and fun.
We explore the session’s core question—”What are right and wrong, virtue and sin?”—through a series of activities that includes wall-to-wall questions, creation of an artistic Garden of Eden, the story of Adam and Eve, and Ethics Play, a game included in all sessions as either an activity or an alternate activity. This session is the first in a series of four that focuses on faith as it relates to virtue and sin.
We hope to see you all back for our growing children’s program.
