Social Justice Team News

06/24/2026/by Francine Less
  • You may have heard about Pu’uhonua O Waianae (Mama Twinkle’s community and our Share the Plate recipient for May) on the news recently.  Senator Samantha DeCorte held a surprise press conference protesting DLNR’s decision to extend to October the deadline for moving the remaining Boat Harbor residents to the Mauka Village and clear everything out of the Boat Harbor Village.  Marie Anne and Francine Less visited the villages this week.  The residents are all working so hard day after day to accomplish these goals.  We were told that 30 new container living units are on order for Mauka Village and that will accommodate 30 residents from the Boat Harbor Village, and the remaining 20-30 residents will be moved thereafter.  The Mauka Village has different types of living accommodations including an ADA compliant kupuna section.
  • Our share the plate recipient organization for June is Hawaii Health and Harm Reduction Center.
  • Happy Pride Month 🌈
  • The 2026 AIDS Walk is Saturday June 27 at Kapiolani Park.  For more information go to this site:  https://honoluluaidswalk.org/.
  • A webinar on Volunteer Opportunities to Help Protect Elections will take place on Sunday June 14th, 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM at 627 South St Suite 105, Honolulu, HI 96813 and online via Zoom. Judith Wong, President of the League of Women Voters of Hawaiʻi, will speak to us about election security and how as volunteers we can help promote and protect the integrity of upcoming elections. Opportunities range from taking part in voter registration drives, helping kūpuna with ballots (either with the fine print or making sure they sign the ballot properly), getting voters to voting centers (if that’s their preference) to signing up to be official observers at the Counting Center. Register on Mobilize to receive the Zoom link for the meeting.
  • Remember all the school supplies we collected for Helping Hands last month?  These are being distributed during June and July at various locations.  If you’d like to volunteer to help distribute them please see Marie Anne or Francine Less.
  • “SocialJustice@Heart – Interfaith Conversations on Social Justice, Democracy, and Belonging” will meet on July 7th at 6:30 pm. Click here for more information and to sign up!

  • Save the date and spread the word on this Pride month event on June 27th, 5pm at our church. Panel discussion: “How Can Trans Kids Survive Hate and Find Joy?” Panelists include Nico Lang, author and journalist, and Kim “Coco” Iwamoto, Hawaii legislator.

  • Oahu Rapid Response Coalition will have a training open to all our members and friends on July 25th at 4 pm. (Remember Gaye Chan of ORRC on our after-service panel a few weeks ago?)
