A Common UU Focus for 2026-27: Supporting Our Vulnerable Members

Dear Fellow Class Advocate:

As we all gear up for the 2026-27 church year — with all of its spiritual, social justice, educational, and, yes, administrative undertakings and commitments — let’s also commit to supporting our most vulnerable UU members.

As you know, UU Class Conversations has been laying the groundwork over the last several months to launch the Mutual Aid Advocacy Project. This pilot seeks to support working-class and other economically marginalized folks in our communities through relationship-based mutual aid. These funds are not a program or a charity distribution. Rather, they are intended to circulate through trust, shared responsibility and care to those in need.

To steward these resources well, we will begin the pilot phase with three to five congregations or congregational collaboratives. We invite your congregation, or perhaps a small coalition of close-by congregations, to be a pilot participant. You will hold and circulate funds locally using shared mutual aid principles, allowing us to move carefully, learn together, and avoid reproducing charity or top-down control.

Why Participate in 2026-27?

In the current political and economic climate — marked by rising costs, shrinking safety nets, and increasing harm to working-class communities — mutual aid networks are not optional. They are essential infrastructure for survival, dignity and collective resilience. This fund is one way we hope to strengthen that infrastructure together.

After this initial phase, we intend to move toward a centralized mutual aid fund that is accessible across the UUCC network. Access will remain grounded in relationship and trust rather than applications or proof of need.

Lights, Camera, Your Class Perspectives

Selfie lighting and cameraShare your class story with UUCC and UUs across the denomination to help raise class awareness. We want to hear how you identify, whether your class identity has changed over time, and how.

Our Steering Committee member, Lily Cho, will meet with you via Zoom and record your class experiences. Contact Lily at info@uuclassconversations.org.

We will edit your conversation for length and clarity, and share it to help other class advocates better understand social class and classism through a UU justice lens. Your video will be available on the UU Class Conversations website similar to the written stories currently on the site.

Talking Class Webinar in September

Working Class Studies Assn Talking Class Sept Seminar PromoOur friends at the Working Class Studies Association have asked us to share information about this upcoming webinar with you.

The speakers are excellent, and the findings and recommendations are based on hard research evidence. The event is organized by long-time WCSA leader Jack Metzgar and UUCC cofounder, Betsy Leondar-Wright.
