Joe Dowson Art Club – A Group Show
Honolulu’s Gallery on the Pali announces an exhibition of art by Native Hawaiian artist Joe Dowson and students he taught in classes at the Waikiki Elks Lodge. The exhibition will run from Feb. 24, 2019, through April 5, 2019, at GOTP, located at the First Unitarian Church at 2500 Pali Highway.
Gallery Hours (Closed Monday and Saturday):
Tuesday through Friday 9 am – 2 pm, and Sundays 9 am to 1 pm.
Artists’ Reception: Saturday, March 9th, 6 – 8 pm.
ABOUT THE EXHIBIT: This exhibit features art by Native Hawaiian artist Joe Dowson and students from the Elks Club art classes that he taught. He was an award-winning Hawaiian Artist. His works have been displayed at the Bishop Museum and acquired by the State Foundation of Culture and the Arts, the American Embassies in Tokyo and Bangladesh, United Airlines, and collected by others throughout the world. In May 2007, Joe received a MAMo Lifetime Achievement Award at the Bishop Museum in recognition of his numerous contributions and accomplishments as a Native Hawaiian visual artist.
The Joe Dawson art club started in 2000 at the Waikiki Elks Lodge and after his passing in 2013, his students continued to meet and paint together at the Elks Lodge. They continued the art club in Joe’s memory to celebrate his love of art and love of life. Besides his students art, a selection of Joe’s art will also be in the show. Elks Club artists in the exhibit include Robert Dusenschon, Beverly Espiritu, Bobbie Kennedy, and Jackie Burke.
