GET OUT THE VOTE!

Your Social Justice Council received a grant from the UUA to fund a Get Out the Vote project aimed at getting as many people as possible to the polls and letting the voice of the voiceless be heard.

To this end, we will be meeting with some of our houseless neighbors this week to help them register to vote, and in some cases, apply for absentee ballots. We are coordinating and collaborating with staff at Waikiki Health’s Next Step Shelter, Institute for Human Services (IHS), and Catholic Charities Hawai’i Family Assessment Center to make this happen.

We are also providing transportation, one of the greatest obstacles to voter participation, on Saturday, October 27, 2018. This is one of the Early Voting days in which citizens may register and vote at the same time at Honolulu Hale. We will use a 15-passenger van to transport voters, both houseless and housed, as needed to the polls. We plan to provide snacks, as well as new socks and slippers to our voters.

Want to know how you can help? We need one more VAN DRIVER for one shift, either 8:00AM-12:00PM or 12:00PM-4:00PM. If you want to do this, please contact Kathy Kaknes at kathy.kaknes@gmail.com.

ANYONE WANT TO COORDINATE?
The University of Hawaii is having a fair to promote LGBTQ awareness, and has invited us to host a booth. It’s being held Friday, Oct. 12, and if the church is interested in being represented we need someone to help lead the effort. Here are the details:
  • National Coming Out Day Fair
  • 10/12/18, 10:00AM – 2:00PM
  • University of Hawaii at Manoa, Campus Center
  • They will provide table and chairs for our booth if we’d like, and we’re welcome to bring a 10′ x 10′ tent.
  • Contact’s name at U.H. is Cameron Miyamoto, 956-9250.

Thanks in advance for your participation and support!

In loving service,

Your Social Justice Council
