September 23, 2018 A.D.O.R.E. meeting - Archived

Message Body

The A.D.O.R.E. (A Dialogue On Race and Ethnicity) group will hold a meeting from 11:30am-2:00pm on Sunday, September 23rd in the church sanctuary. We will discuss the final three chapters of Ijeoma Oluo’s book, So you want to talk about race, and then view and discuss Shakti Butler’s powerful film, Cracking the Codes: The System of Racial Inequity.

The final chapters of So you want to talk about race are entitled: But what if I hate Al Sharpton? , I just got called racist, what do I do now?, and Talking is great, but what else can I do?

And, following are two descriptions of the film, Cracking the Codes: The System of Racial Inequity:

In the U.S., race – more than any other demographic factor – determines levels of individual educational achievement, health and life expectancy, possibility of incarceration, and wealth. This film reveals a self-perpetuating system of inequity in which internal factors play out in external structures: institutions, policy and law. Designed for dialogue and learning, ‘Cracking the Codes: The System of Racial Inequity’ works to disentangle internal beliefs within, as it builds skills to recognize and address the external drivers of inequity. – Shakti Butler, World Trust Educational Services, Inc.

Part story telling, part toolbox, ‘Cracking the Codes’ deftly portrays the complex interplay between the personal, institutional and systemic. ‘Cracking the Codes’ helps us pull the lens back so we can see the landscape of racialization and how we as individuals are shaped by it. It will be an invaluable resource for anyone who has ever wondered how to get this conversation started – and keep it going. – Makani Themba-Nixon, The Praxis Project

One can see by the chapter titles of the book and by the descriptions of the film, that the A.D.O.R.E. group is discussing topics that are crucial to discuss in today’s world. One need not have read the book to join in the book discussion. Please come join us! Everyone is welcome!

*Pizza will be available for $3.00 for two pieces; childcare will be available upstairs.

  1. Hi Jill,
I’m not driving yet, it’s only 3 weeks since my knee replacement, but I’m eager to see all of you again.
