Pride Month Begins! - Archived

Rev. Dr. Greg attended the 4th Annual Pride Flag Raising Ceremony hosted by the Office of the Mayor of the City and County of Honolulu and the HawaiĘ»i LGBT Legacy Foundation. City councilors, mayors from the other islands, and local community leaders were in attendance to raise the flag and proclaim the Rainbow Shower Tree the “Official Pride Tree of Honolulu.”

Historians, botanists, Native Hawaiian cultural practitioners, and Mayor Rick Blagiardi helped us bless the occasion and understand the queer significance of the tree: our hybrid version of the Rainbow Shower Tree was first cultivated on Oʻahu and is named in English and in Latin for two women who lived on the island in the early and mid-20th century, both of whom were in open committed lesbian relationships, Wilhemina Tenney and Marie C. Neal. Read more about the event here: https://www8.honolulu.gov/mayor/pride-flag-raising-ceremony-pride-tree-proclamation-and-honolulu-hale-lighting-celebrate-start-of-honolulu-pride-month/.
