Painting the Church

Al Rowland, a long-time church member and architect by trade, was affectionately known as the Aesthetic Czar.  A quiet man by nature, he chose colors boldly.  He gleefully introduced an element of surprise into the neutrals of his beloved Navajo White.  Witness the palette of reds in the sanctuary chairs and the pink ceiling of the porte cochere.  In 2013, when it was time to repaint the church exterior, he recommended a palette of deep browns and greys that was passed over in favor of a light gray reflective value that appears white in the intense Hawaiian sun.

Molly Rowland recently discovered Al’s folder with the 2013 Pratt & Lambert color swatches and gave it to the Building and Grounds Committee.  The painting contractor will use Sherwin Williams Emerald®   paint, a high-quality exterior paint.  Al’s swatches have been matched with Sherwin Williams paint chips shown here.  We have learned from experience that neutral colors appear white under the intense Hawaiian sun.  The Building and Grounds Committee recommends a dark reflective value in honor of Al Rowland and to make a new, bolder statement about who we are.  The paint chip selection will be displayed on the church bulletin board.  We hope you will take the time to look at the swatches and imagine how our church home might look.  Large areas of the samples will be applied to the exterior in advance so that we can better study the color choices.
