At the May 2017 First Unitarian Church of Honolulu Annual Meeting, Members voted to adopt the 8th Principle:

“We covenant to affirm and promote: journeying toward spiritual wholeness 
by working to build a diverse multicultural Beloved Community by our actions that 
accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions.”

8th Principle Task Force Mission

  • Immerse our congregation in awareness & support of the 8th Principle

  • Initiate & coordinate implementation of anti-racism/other forms of oppressions actions & practices at First Unitarian Church of Honolulu

Goals for Accountability: 2023-2024

  • Build a team of 2-3 members trained in the conflict transformation practice of Restorative Circles in preparation for offering a conflict resolution process to the congregation.

Goals for Accountability: 2022-2023
  • Bring awareness to the congregation and promote participation in conflict transformation learning & skill building
  • Bring awareness to the congregation of microaggressions* and exclusionary behaviors and promote participation in learning opportunities focused on acting in more welcoming ways
  • Document & submit church’s Welcoming Congregation renewal for 2022
  • Participate in the monthly 8th Principle Learning Community virtual gatherings & engage in the Facebook 8th Principle UU Learning Community
  • Participate & share facilitation at quarterly gathering with A.D.O.R.E.& Social Justice Council Leaders to coordinate and support each others’ projects.
  • Contribute to the church’s monthly magazine.
*Microagressions are comments or actions that subtly and often unconsciously or unintentionally expresses a prejudiced attitude toward a member of a marginalized group.

Goals for Accountability: 2021-2022

  • Representation & participation on Widening the Circle Committee
  • Representation & participation with Faith Action’s Transformative Justice Task Force: Key action-Reform Cash Bail Campaign
  • Representation & participation with Study & Struggle, a Hawaii learning group on Prison Industrial Complex Abolition
  • Research & design a learning series on Oppressions for 2022/2023
  • Document & submit church’s Welcoming Congregation renewal for 2021
  • Participate in the monthly 8th Principle Learning Community virtual gatherings & engage in the Facebook 8th Principle UU Learning Community
  • Participate & share facilitation at quarterly gathering with A.D.O.R.E.& Social Justice Council Leaders and Rev. T.J. to coordinate and support each others projects.

Goals for Accountability: 2020-2021

  • Expand the task force size
  • Sponsor & produce the virtual Jubilee Anti-Racism Training & Follow Up Reflection event
  • Redesign & launch the Recognizing & Interrupting Racial Microaggression Workshop for Zoom
  • Document & submit church’s Welcoming Congregation renewal for 2020
  • Participate in the monthly 8th Principle Learning Community virtual gatherings & engage in the Facebook 8th Principle UU Learning Community
  • Initiate a regular gathering with A.D.O.R.E.& Social Justice Council Leaders with Rev. T.J. to coordinate and support each others’ projects.

Goals for Accountability: 2019-2020

  • Establish measurements & accountability for fulfilling our mission
  • Research, build connections with & promote activities of  Oahu groups/organizations engaged in anti-racism work
  • Amplify the 8th Principle & broadcast how to join the 8th Principle Task Force & give input
  • Propose funding leaders of color attendance at GA & BLUU Gathering

Goals for Accountability: 2018-2019

  • Inclusion of The 8th Principle in all church materials, signage, website
  • Produce 2 anti-racism focused workshops/trainings: building our skills to increase our capacity to speak and act for equity
  • Create a Policy for Mending – a way to recover when microaggressions & offenses occur within our church community
