Faith Action Newsletter- Fall 2018
Although we live in Hawaii and do not experience the beautiful changing colors of Fall, we still go through colorful changes!

Most recently, we changed the structure of our organization by dissolving our two chapters (Oahu and Maui) and functioning independently. We also changed our staffing from ONE to TWO with the addition of a part-time Organizing Assistant. Lastly, after 22 years of being known as FACE, we now call ourselves Faith Action! These are a lot of significant changes in just three months.

During the next couple of months, we will be busy continuing our Listening Processes, transitioning our leadership and preparing for the next legislative session. We have some innovative housing policy ideas and we ALL need to be prepared to fight for the changes we want to see. To add to our collective power, we will be organizing the homeless community in ways that have never been done before, building grassroots leaders who will work hand-in-hand with our veteran leaders. This is exciting!

Stay tuned for upcoming events since we will need your participation to keep the momentum going….and going!!

Your sister in justice,

Christy

Meet Our New Organizing Assistant!
Please welcome our newest staff member, Soo San Schake (you can call her Soo, pronounced Sue). She is originally from San Jose, California but has been living in Hawaii for the past 10 years. Soo has a background in medical assisting, healthcare administration, social services, and grant writing. She is currently a part-time undergrad student at UH West Oahu, majoring in Public Administration. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, surfing, reading, traveling, writing, and DIY crafting.

Housing Now! Committee Preparing for 2019 Legislative Session

The Housing Now! Committee has been working very hard lately and we have arrived at a couple of very important and innovative policies that Faith Action will be proposing this year! These policies center on financing mom-and-pop housing development and renting to build equity as well as increasing the conveyance tax. We are hoping to hold a Housing Summit soon that will be open to not only our members but also to legislators and the wider public. We want everyone possible to be educated on these policies.

Please join us THIS Wednesday, October 3 @ 4:00 at Church of the Crossroads (1212 University Ave.) for a special educational session on these proposed concepts.

Hosts Delegated Council Meeting
It was a beautiful day on Saturday, September 22 in Wahiawa! There were 86 present to help honor the Reverend Bob Nakata and the Reverend Stanley Bain for their years of commitment and leadership for Faith Action for Community Equity. We were also excited to covenant with Wahiawa Health [Rev. Sam Domingo lights the covenant candle with Cat Wong, Marketing/Public Relations, and Jay Raymundo, Board President above] and welcome them into our membership!
Faith Action member EAH Housing breaks ground with co-developer Bronx Pro LLC for the first ever micro-unit project on Oahu, Nohona Hale, on July 26. Faith Action members and City and State officials attended the ceremony and enjoyed a delicious lunch. Located in Kaka`ako, this affordable housing project will be green, supportive of multi-modal transit, and represent smart growth principles. Nohona Hale will target lower- income households.
Wahiawa Health Public Blessing & Open House
On August 18, the passionate and dedicated staff and board of Wahiawa Health were joined by Senator Donovan Dela Cruz, Kirsten Baumgart Turner from Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard’s office, Faith Action leaders and the community to celebrate! Under the leadership of Executive Director Bev Harbin, so much hard work was done to develop this Community Health Center. They have created a beautiful place of Aloha and kokua for all who need its services.
