HousingNOW! Needs You
By Calvin (Foo) Pham, Chair of the HousingNOW! Task Force
We are getting to the grassroots and we want you to join us!
Over the last two months, HousingNOW! members, Faith Action leaders, and staff surveyed transit riders at the Kalihi, Alapaʻi, and Ala Moana Transit Centers about their housing needs. These surveys are important because they facilitate interactions between Faith Action members and the communities for which we advocate. We are meeting transit riders where they are to listen to their needs. Community organizing is about connecting people before it is advocacy.
Two-thirds of transit-dependent riders are low-income, therefore talking story with people who depend on TheBus can be used to elevate the needs of our low-income neighbors. As we continue to explore ideas to site low-cost housing near transit, it’s important to center our perspective on our transit-riding community and think about how we can advocate for their needs.
We are calling you to act. HousingNOW! is asking for all Faith Action members to volunteer an hour to conduct surveys. We know from our own experiences that getting into the community to talk story will be rewarding and broaden your perspectives.
E-mail housing@faithactionhawaii.org to be notified of future survey dates.
