What is OWL?
Our Whole Lives is a curriculum developed but the Unitarian Universalist Association and the United Church of Christ that helps participants make informed and responsible decisions about their relationships, health and behavior in the context of their own faith. OWL equips participants with accurate, age-appropriate information in six subject areas: human development, relationships, personal skills, sexual behavior, sexual health, and society and culture. It provides not only facts about anatomy and human development, but helps participants to clarify their values, build interpersonal skills and understand the social, emotional and spiritual aspects of sexuality.
Why OWL?
The Church of the Crossroads, the First Unitarian Church of Honolulu, and Central Union Church have been involved in the OWL program for several years and have separately or together run OWL programs for youth at various levels. Those who have gone through the program have had positive feedback about their experiences.
When will this take place?
The proposal is to hold the sessions from February 2020-May 2020.
How long is the curriculum?
The Grades 7-9 curriculum is 25 sessions, with each session lasting 1.5 hour each (see proposed calendar). The proposal is to hold two OWL sessions each Sunday afternoon with an intensive weekend at the beginning and end.
How much will it cost?
In the past each family participating in the OWL program contributes $100. This money mostly pays for childcare for younger siblings during the program, so that parents can participate.
Who is participating?
First Unitarian, Crossroads and Central Union are combining interested youth between 7th and 9th grade. Other youth and families who are interested are welcome to join.
Who are the facilitators?
The facilitators are members from our congregations or the community who have taken special training for the OWL program. We are aiming to have six facilitators.
