First Unitarian Church of Honolulu
This is the first in a series of meetings put together by a team organized by the Church Board to come to some important decisions regarding our future. Written questions will be accepted at the end of the meeting.
Announcing a Series of Important Special All-Congregation Meetings
Please join us for a series of meetings important for the future of our church starting on Sunday, January 14, 2018. This congregation has for the last year been involved in the “Future Shapers” process that enabled us to develop aspirations for our future. Options for ministry and possibilities for the building are two key issues expressed in our aspirations requiring decision and action. The Board has decided to involve the entire congregation in addressing these two key issues by means of the series of monthly meetings to begin on January 14, 2018, after church. We are calling this process “Decision Together.”
The January session will be a strict information only meeting. It will help us to understand our financial situation, ministerial options, and possibilities for our building. Information will be presented by members of the congregation in as objective a way as possible. We will invite emails and written questions for the next meeting.
At the following meetings we will respond to questions that have come up, and take new questions from the floor. We will also take time to “talk story” about our history and experiences in this church. We can then begin to have discussions about our way forward. These questions and discussions will be handled in both small and large groups since these are complex, interrelated, and sometimes emotion-laden
Out of this process, we envision a shared realization developing, but that will only happen if we can be open to the facts, listen to one another, be creative in our thinking, and maintain our practical problem-solving intent. Please leave your preconceptions at the door in commitment to the goal of discovering a shared desirable and doable plan for this church.
We initially envision four meetings to achieve this, but this is an open-ended process that will only conclude when we all come to a common decision, a consensus. When we arrive at this point we will formalize our agreement by vote. Thus we can have the unified energy and will as a group to muster our resources and go forward to accomplish what we decide.
Though this first meeting is scheduled on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day weekend, we hope a large number of the congregation can be present, since we need everyone to be informed and involved in this process. We plan to video record this first meeting so that you can see it if you cannot attend, and in order to review it to go over the facts if you need to.
We are optimistic that this process will move us forward in a deliberate, collaborative, and decisive way. Please mark your calendars and join us. The Decision Together Team and the Church Board
