We will discuss The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead. It received the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, the Carnegie Medal, the Heartland Prize, the Arthur C. Clarke Award, the Hurston-Wright Award, and yes – Oprah liked it too. In this novel Cora is a slave on a cotton plantation in Georgia. Life is hell for all the slaves, but especially bad for Cora as she is coming into womanhood – where she knows that even greater pain awaits. When a recent arrival from Virginia, tells her about the Underground Railroad, they decide to escape.
