The A.D.O.R.E. Group (A Dialogue On Race and Ethnicity) will meet from 11:30 am-1:30 pm in the First Unitarian Church Sanctuary on Sunday, October 22nd.

We will view and discuss the PBS documentary film called “American Experience: The Massie Affair.”

In 1931, 20-year old Navy wife Thalia Massie wrongly accused five young local men of kidnapping and raping her at Ala Moana. One of the men, Joseph Kahahawai, was murdered. The other four were defamed and the killers literally got away with murder. Defense lawyer Clarence Darrow, so famous for his progressive views, curiously defended the killers.

The case became known across the nation, reverberating all the way to the White House. And, because the unjust outcome of the trials was racially based, it is said to have affected race relations in Hawaii to this day.

Pizza will be offered at $3 for two slices and childcare will be available upstairs.

Allison and I look forward to a good discussion with you that will shed light on “racism in Hawaii.” See you on October 22nd!

Aloha,
Jill
