June 8, an Active and Moving Sunday Morning

The Annual Meeting was held on June 8 with Vice-President, Catherine Graham, presiding. The slate of nominees and the 2025-26 budget passed by a wide majority with little discussion.

The meeting followed a very moving message by Keola Whittaker, a local born and bred lawyer and now 3-year divinity student at Starr King, a Unitarian-Universalist seminary, regarding the anguish of the 9-year-old transgender student at Maui Preparatory Academy, who is now required to use the boy’s bathroom after four years of attending her school as a girl. The outpouring of empathy, in response to Keola’s call to us to do more as Unitarian-Universalists, led to a postcard-writing session at the June 15 service. Writing a postcard to a school administrator was a simple act, but it felt so right. Mahalo to all who organized and responded to the call.
