Building Intentional Community across the Generations

Since members and friends will gather in person, this is a great time to look at how to build relationships between different generations.  We all have different ideas of how people should act and relate when we are in a community.  This workshop will look at some of these different ideas and explore how we all can respect our differences and desires.  Everyone should take this class!  It will be informative and interactive.

One evening:  Thursday, March 3, 2022 6:00-7:30 PM HST

Dr. Michele Townsend Grove is a Unitarian Universalist religious educator who is serving as our religious education consultant this year.  Michele lives in Galena, Illinois with her husband Andy and daughter Helena.  Michele enjoys classes like this one where all are learners and teachers in the same space.  Parents, caretakers, and congregational leaders will join Dr. Michele in facilitating this training.

beginning ‘ōlelo Hawai‘i

Gabriel Tioganco and friends will guide beginners through the basics of the language of these lands. This class will focus on conversation. Introductions/greeting will be the goal for the first 5 lessons. With emphasis on Pronouns, Definite Articles, Infinite Articles, Demonstrative Pronouns.

I live in Kailua. I’m Hawaiian, Filipino, Chinese. I attend First Unitarian Church of Honolulu. I’m not a fluent speaker and am a [‘opio] young student in ‘Olelo Hawaii. I intend to share the knowledge that I have gained with the Beginners Class in hopes to inspire and guide you on the path of wanting to pursue speaking ‘ōlelo Hawaii. I’ll be walking that path with you hand in hand! Learning along the way, while sharing my [mana’o]. Aloha!

Participants will need the following materials for class:

• Hawaiian Dictionary (Hawaiian-English, English-Hawaiian) by Mary Kawena Pukui and Samuel H. Elbert
• Notebook and pen

All Good Things: Ending Well

All good things must come to an end—this includes each one of our lives. We will gather monthly to discuss some of the concerns we have about death and dying. Rev. T. J. and invited guests will help us consider some of the more practical elements of the end of our lives while addressing some of the spiritual questions this important phase of every life raises for us.

Rev. T. J. has served as minister of First Unitarian Church of Honolulu since 2017. He has led workshops on death and dying and worked with many people facing the ends of their lives. He believes that one of the most important taboo subjects to speak about with ease is the very natural end to all of our lives.

Finding Your Spiritual Voice

Everyone has a story to tell.  This workshop will invite you to explore and share your spiritual life through writing for the spoken word and sharing that writing within the group (and possibly the larger congregation). We will use Erika Hewitt’s book, The Shared Pulpit, a Sermon Seminar for Lay People as our guide. The seminar will be limited to eight people, giving preference to those who have not had much involvement with leading worship in the past.

This program is limited to 8 participants.

In person workshop at the First Unitarian Church of Honolulu. Childcare will be provided. Please advise by February 24 if you’d like childcare.

We are looking at alternative (online or hybrid) approaches in coming seasons. 

Cost: We have ordered copies of the book, which you may purchase ($14) or borrow from the church for the class.  There is otherwise no charge.

Facilitators:  Mary MacKay and Rev. T. J. FitzGerald
Mary MacKay is a longtime member of First Unitarian Church of Honolulu and has led courses on lay preaching at other congregations. Rev. T. J. is the minister of the church and loves helping people to explore more deeply their spiritual lives.
