July 4: Striving for “A More Perfect Union”

This weekend, we take time to celebrate our nation’s birthday and to give thanks for the many freedoms we share.  Though we still must strive for a “more perfect union,” we have seen in these past months how many nations continue to look to the United States as the preeminent democracy on our planet.  Let us pray for the grace to sustain that role.

Food for Thought:

  • “In the truest sense, freedom cannot be bestowed; it must be achieved.” – Franklin D. Roosevelt, U.S. President

  • “Government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.” – Abraham Lincoln, U.S. President

  • “Our country is not the only thing to which we owe our allegiance. It is also owed to justice and to humanity. Patriotism consists not in waving the flag, but in striving that our country shall be righteous as well as strong.” – James Bryce, 20th century author of a two-volume study of modern democracies
